Its More Than A Job

It’s More Than A Job In response to an earlier entry of mine, this post appeared on College Confidential: You know, I get sick of college admissions officers saying how they couldnt accept so many wonderful people. While its supposed to be comforting, obviously, I just find it really insincere. I mean, either youre accepted or youre not. There is no grey area so they shouldnt try to sugarcoat the harsh reality. Im thankful to whomever posted this, because it really made me think. Its certainly a fair post, and I imagine a lot of our applicants share these sentiments. A million years ago when I was applying to college, perhaps I would have felt the same way. Ive written before about how the class is selected, but Im too tired to dig up the post so Ill give a quick recap. First you apply. Your application is read by a senior staff member who will look for deal-breakers (like a bunch of Ds, for example). Assuming youre competitive, your application is then read by a primary reader who will summarize it at length for the committee. Then a second reader (and sometimes a third) will read and write their own summaries. Then it will go to selection committee, where multiple groups of different admissions staff and faculty members will weigh in on it. Assuming youve made it that far, the senior staff will then review it again. Approximately 12 people (give or take) will significantly discuss and debate your application before youre admitted. This is all very intentional; committee decisions ensure that every decision is correct in the context of the overall applicant pool, and that no one individuals bias or preferences or familiarity with a giv en case has any chance of swaying a decision unfairly. With that in mind, let me tell you a little bit about what my job is like from November through March. Three days a week, I take a random bunch of applications to the public library, find a quiet corner, and immerse myself in your lives. I read about your triumphs, I read about your dreams, I read about the tragedies that define you. I read about your passions, your inventions, your obsession with video games, dance, Mozart, Monet. I read about the person close to you who died. I read about your small towns, your big cities, the week you spent abroad that changed your life. I read about your parents getting divorced, your house burning down, your girlfriend cheating on you. I read about the car you rebuilt with your dad, the championship debate you lost, the team you led to failure, the performance you aced. I read about the people youve helped and the people youve hurt. I read about how youve stood tall in the face of racism, homophobia, poverty, injustice. Then I read about the lives youve changed a math or science teacher, a humanities teacher, a counselor. I read the things that they probably dont say to your face for fear of inflating your ego: that youre the best in their careers, that kids like you are the reason they chose to be a teacher in the first place, that theyre better people for having known you. If youve had an interview, I get to read about how you come across in person to someone youve just met how your face lights up at the mention of cell biology, how you were five minutes late because you had an audition, how your smile can fill a room, how you simply shine. (Your grades and scores are clearly competitive or your application wouldnt be on my pile in the first place.) By now Im fully invested in you so I write a gazillion nice things about you in your summary and Im smiling the whole time. I talk about your depth, all the ways youre a great match to MIT, all the things I know youll contribute to campus. I conclude with phrases like clear admit and perfect choice. In my head I imagine bumping into you on the Infinite Corridor, asking you how your UROP is going, seeing your a cappella group perform. I come home each night and tell my wife over dinner how lucky I am, because I never seem to pick boring applications out of the pile. In fact, I tell her, Im inspired enough by the stories I read to think that the world might actually turn out to be okay after all. In March I go into committee with my colleagues, having narrowed down my top picks to a few hundred people. My colleagues have all done the same. Then the numbers come in: this years admit rate will be 13%. For every student you admit, you need to let go of seven others. What? But I have so many who But And then the committee does its work, however brutal. Its not pretty, but at least its fair. (And by fair I mean fair in the context of the applicant pool; of course its not fair that there are so few spots for so many qualified applicants.) When its all over, about 13% of my top picks are offered admission. I beg, I plead, I make ridiculous promises (just ask the senior staff) but at the end of the day, a committee decision is a committee decision. Of my many favorites this year, there were a few who really got to me, and when they didnt get in, the tears came. Some would call me foolish for getting this wrapped up in the job, but honestly, I couldnt do this job if I disconnected myself from the human component of it. Its my job to present you to the committee; if your dream of being at MIT didnt become my dream on some small level, then really, why am I doing this at all? Others would disagree, but then, others arent me. To the 87% of you who have shared your lives with us and trusted us with your stories over the last four months, please know that they meant something to me, and I wont forget you. When I say that I share the pain of these decisions with you, Im not lying. Im really not lying. To the person up there who said while its supposed to be comforting, obviously, I just find it really insincere you have it backwards. I dont expect it (or anything else) to be comforting at this moment. But insincere? No. Not that. Just got confirmation that the USPS picked up the mail (for real), so its on the way. Ill be thinking about all of you.

Bridget Jones Diary Is it a feminist novel Literature Essay Samples

Bridget Jones' Diary Is it a women's activist novel Helen Fielding's 'Bridget Jones' Diary' is at the bleeding edge of present day female culture, contributing extraordinarily to making the 'chick lit' type as we probably am aware it today. The epic was composed and distributed in the mid-1990s, when post-woman's rights was profoundly well known and the points of second-wave women's activists during the 1980s were viewed as cultivated. All through the novel, Bridget and her single, feisty companions do appear to have everything: the occupations, the property, and in particular the opportunity to drink, smoke and swear as they see fit. Things being what they are, with the novel set among post-woman's rights where the characters are apparently liberated from the restrictions of a male centric culture, the inquiry remains: Is Bridget Jones' Diary a women's activist book? The accompanying assessment of her connections, status at work and her own relationship with her self-perception tries to investigate this further. There are two primary hetero connections in 'Bridget Jones' Diary', Daniel Cleaver and Mark Darcy, individually. These connections apparently have a women's activist inclination, as Bridget has the opportunity to pick who she has sexual relations with, particularly in the working environment. In any case, there are still parts of debasement all through the transaction of the two connections. The most clear model is the start of Daniel and Bridget's relationship. It undercuts the peacocking routine (typically performed by the male) so Bridget wears increasingly uncovering garments at work to pick up Daniel's consideration; he truly sits in his office running the organization while Bridget presents her body to him for sexual judgment. At the point when he is definitely a scalawag, she writes in her journal: 'Why, when individuals are leaving their accomplices in light of the fact that theyre taking part in an extramarital entanglements with another person, do they figure it will appear to be smarter to imagine there is nobody else included?' Through utilizing the confession booth configuration of the journal, it concedes an office and feeling of control to Bridget. This is notwithstanding the way that one of the principal passages in her journal is the intend to locate a 'reasonable sweetheart' who isn't one of the accompanying: 'heavy drinkers, compulsive workers, duty phobics, unwanted voyeurs, egotists, enthusiastic fuckwits or sick people.' She additionally sets out a New Year's Resolution to 'not fantasize about a specific individual who exemplifies every one of these things', referencing Daniel Cleaver. This presents the possibility of decision, a key part of second wave women's liberation and a component which present woman's rights asserts on have permitted ladies, as a risky thing. The post-women's activist lady has the opportunity to pick whom she courts; she realizes that a man is terrible for her yet can and will seek after him in any case. Be that as it may, the peruser is excessively exemplified with compassion toward Bridget's circumstance as an abandoned lady to see this, particularly as Fielding offers this conversation starter to the peruser for them to answer the 'Why?' and relate to. When Bridget has been demonstrated at settling on awful options with men, Mark Darcy dives in and spares her, the man who her Mum has suggested she date. At the point when Bridget goes to an evening gathering where various egotistical couples mock her single status, Darcy spares the night by maintaining he enjoys her simply the manner in which she is. He starts to lead the pack in the new relationship to spare Bridget from settling on these choices. Along these lines, the postfeminist parts of this novel stunt the peruser in to believing that Bridget has the opportunity to settle on her own choices and subsequently botches, though in actuality she is abused by Daniel Cleaver, the reading material reprobate, and spared by Mark Darcy, named aft er the agonizing yet gallant character in Pride and Prejudice, a certainly unfeminist finishing. One of the prevalent parts of fourth-wave women's liberation is a lady's relationship with her body. The female body has consistently been political, regardless of whether it is concerning uncovered skin, make-up, indiscriminate moving or sexual relations. Bridget's relationship with her body is intensely educated by the way of life she lives in and is entirely postfeminist. This is accentuated by the journal passages toward the start of every section that tell the peruser her weight, calories expended, weight lost or picked up and cigarettes smoked. At the point when Bridget is at her most reduced, for instance throughout her separation, these figures reflect it by an expanded carbohydrate content and a weight gain, which is constantly seen as lost control and good disappointment. Her postfeminist relationship with her body is likewise appeared through her Bridget's pre-date custom: 'Being a lady is more regrettable than being a rancher there is so much reaping and harvest showering to be done: legs to be waxed, underarms shaved, eyebrows culled, feet pumiced, skin peeled and saturated, spots scrubbed, roots colored, eyelashes colored, nails documented, cellulite rubbed, stomach muscles exercised.'It is especially intriguing that Fielding characterizes this as the normal you experience for 'being a lady'. This proposes the accompanying exercises, in this occasion intended to satisfy a man, are inherently associated with a ladies' character. It additionally proposes that on the off chance that you don't do stomach schedules or shave your legs you by one way or another lose this character and become to a lesser degree a lady as indicated by social principles. Handling additionally infuses humor in to the honestly alarming rundown of magnificence guidelines by contrasting it with being more regrettable than a rancher who splashes and gather crops. This makes the feeling that these female exercises are similarly as ordinary and common as gathering crops, introduci ng the prepping as a mammoth however fundamental activity. To close, Bridget's relationship with her self-perception is solidly established inside postfeminism. It proposes that a lady can court a man as she loves and has the sexual opportunity as a lady, yet it accompanies rules. You should look and play out a specific route so as to pay this opportunity and stay with in the norm for the mid-1990's way of life. The focal storyline in Bridget Jones' Diary follows her tricks with her companions, family and different sweethearts. It concentrates next to no on her profession, and its essential use inside the plot is as a vehicle for her to meet Daniel Cleaver. There is additionally next to no attention on Bridget climbing the profession stepping stool. The main way that Bridget can be viewed as having a preferred position on Daniel after he undermines her is by finding employment elsewhere and reporting to the workplace when he asks her not to leave: 'Thank you, Daniel, that is generally excellent to know. Be that as it may, if remaining here methods working inside 10 yards of you, in all honesty, Id rather have a vocation cleaning Saddam Husseins arse.' The affront inspires a reaction from the two characters inside the novel and the peruser, particularly when envisioned as in the film with a young lady power soundtrack played close by it. In any case, the preferred position that Bridget presen tly has on Daniel is neither expert nor sensible. She has been diminished to the hated ladies who can toss affronts from him that would be at home on the play area. Besides, her humble situation as a partner in distributing desiring Daniel as the supervisor presents various needs to the perusers; you ought to invest all your energy in to your appearance and in to dating and performing for men, even in the work environment. The objective is to discover a beau and settle down to bliss, not find this joy in one's vocation. Indeed, even her Mother, and her Mother's friend network, are housewives and are viewed as dedicated to their spouses, trusting that Bridget will join their positions. This scene additionally has particularly post-women's activist perspectives. Bridget is the lady who has everything and can toss her activity in a man's face to openly humiliate him. Actually she needs to make a solid effort to land another position first, maybe accepting a decrease in salary and chang ing her circumstance so as to acquire this fantastic cut off to the association and her expert profession. Taking everything into account, Helen Fielding infuses humor routinely in to this novel to ridicule the 'Cosmopolitan culture' that Bridget begins from, so as to occupy the peruser from the entirely unfeminist conduct all through. Along these lines, it has been contended that 'Bridget Jones' Diary' is anything but a women's activist novel, yet a content that to a great extent takes care of in to the post-women's activist way of talking. The tale features the restrictions that ladies despite everything experience in consistently life, yet chalk it down to this experience of 'being a lady' without really going up against the deliberate man centric frameworks that propagate this social circumstance.
